DEPARTMENT PROFILE

The department was started in the year 2021 to offer under graduate degree programme i.e. Bachelor of Engineering (BE) in Computer Science & Business System (CSBS). The department has qualified, experienced and zealous faculty members to guide the students in academics and career. The faculty members are actively involved in teaching, product development and research. The department aims at building the students’ career by placing special emphasis on all-round development through continuous interaction with Industry. The campus placement has been scaling higher and higher peaks right from its inception with multinational companies recruiting students in large numbers. The department aspires to promote start-up ideas and entrepreneurship among students to cater the needs of society.

Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Science & Business System programme aims to impart cutting-edge technologies and business skills among students to become competent industry ready IT professionals, researchers and entrepreneurs. This programme provides hands on exposure to emerging technologies in data analytics and computation, software development, marketing research, operation management etc. The programme’s goal is to provide skill learning to solve problems in aspects of science, technology, business and society.

To increase the opportunity of placements to students, the department conducts soft skills training programmes, technical skill development activities and initiatives on self-learning (Spoken Tutorial programmes by IIT Bombay). The students’ association and National Service Scheme (NSS) wing frequently conducts various programmes to strengthen leadership skills, teamwork and communication; and awareness on protection of environment and social responsibilities.

Bachelor of Engineering (BE) in Computer science & Business System (CSBS) programme is affiliated to Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), Belgaum, Karnataka. This programme is offered with a blend of theory and practical courses and projects that help its students to cope up with the recent advancements in the computer industry. Engineering graduates in Computer Science and Business System will be able to:

  1. Engineering knowledge: Apply knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering fundamentals and an engineering specialization to the solution of complex engineering problems
  2. Problem analysis: : Identify, formulate, research literature and analyse complex engineering problems reaching substantiated conclusions using first principles of mathematics, natural sciences and engineering sciences
  3. Design/development of solutions:Design solutions for complex engineering problems and design systems, components or processes that meet specified needs with appropriate consideration for public health and safety, cultural, societal, and environmental Considerations.
  4. Conduct investigations of complex problems: Conduct investigations of complex problems using research-based knowledge and research methods including Design of experiments, analysis and interpretation of data, and synthesis of information to provide valid conclusions.

LABORATORIES

The department has well-equipped lab, including the Data Structures and Algorithms Laboratory, Computer System Laboratory and Business Intelligence and Data Analytics Laboratory. The lab facilities are essential in giving students real-world experience and exposure to the ideas and tools that are taught in the classroom.

Data Structures and Algorithm Laboratory (CSBSL-01):This lab is intended to assist students in comprehending and carrying out a variety of data structures and algorithms experiments, as well as Ability Enhancement Courses using hands-on methods. It offers a setting where students can practice coding, evaluate the effectiveness of various algorithms, and work through challenging issues. 35 PCs outfitted with the software tools needed to conduct and evaluate academic lab experiments are available in the lab. Computer System Laboratory (CSBSL-02): This lab provides a setting for knowledge implementation and experimentation and is fully furnished with the latest software and systems. Business Intelligence and Data Analytics Laboratory(CSBSL-03): This lab is equipped with all the software necessary for regular laboratory work as well as project work and is appropriate for conducting any skill development program.

Mr. Kashyap Hebbar K, Founder & CEO of Jagadhathri Infosolutions Pvt. Ltd. and alumnus of CEC was the resource person for the event. The objective of the program was to encourage students to think critically about how they can leverage technology to address real-world problems, fostering a mindset geared towards innovation and impact. Mr. Kashyap shared his invaluable insights and entrepreneurial experiences with students which motivated the students to take up innovation and entrepreneurship. His inspiring journey highlighted the powerful synergy between technology and business in creating meaningful change. Mr. Hebbar discussed current trends at the intersection of technology and business, equipping students with knowledge that can help them stay relevant in an evolving job market. We explored why managing stress is vital, its purpose, and practical application in daily life. Participants were encouraged to consider "what, where, how" before responding to stressors, promoting thoughtful and deliberate reactions. Common mistakes in managing stress, such as avoidance and procrastination, were highlighted, and participants were encouraged to analyze their own stress triggers. Establishing a routine for managing stress, including time management and relaxation practices, was emphasized as crucial for mental and physical well-being. The resource person highlighted various stress management techniques and encouraged participants to follow approaches that they feel most comfortable with, ensuring a personalized and effective stress management plan. The Department of Computer Science and Business System in association with Institution’s Innovation Council organized an industrial visit to Skill Lab at ComedKares Innovation Hub, Mangalore on 25th June 2024. The event included hands-on session on RC BOT controlled by mobile for the 2nd year students of CSBS Department. ComedKares is an initiative by COMEDK to help students enhance their skills by giving access to machines, tools and mentors to build products and solutions that impact community. The students had the opportunity to build the bot and experiment with its functionalities. The event provided students valuable insights into the world of robotics and mobile technology. The session consisted insights on importance of analysing the problem statement on the basis of 5 Ws, requirement of supporting evidence, identifying people affected by the problem, context impact, timeframe and worthiness of the problem. Dr. Venkatesh Nagaraja, Professor and Head, Department of Mechanical Engineering was the resource person for the event. Dr. Nagesh H R, Principal, Canara Engineering College addressed the students and shared his experience on importance of Product-Market fit. The program was chaired by Dr. H Manoj T Gadiyar, Professor and Head, Department of Computer Science and Business System. The session consisted insights on identifying and understanding customers’ needs and pain points, importance of knowing the target customers, validating their problem, aligning customers’ needs with solution business offers through its products and services. MY STORY - Motivational Session by Successful Innovator (06-12-2023)

The Department of Computer Science and Business System in association with Institution's Innovation Council organized a motivational session by a successful innovator and entrepreneur on December 6th, 2023. Mr. Prajwal V Kumar, Director and Co-founder of Mangalore Robautonics Pvt Ltd, was the resource person for the session. The main objective of this programme was to inspire and motivate students by showcasing the success stories of innovators and entrepreneurs, encourage them to pursue their ideas and take up entrepreneurship. Mr. Prajwal Kumar shared his journey of exploration and creation, motivated the students to embrace the spirit of innovation, transform the challenges into opportunities and push all the boundaries. The session highlighted stories of some of the greatest innovators like Elon Musk, the visionary behind companies like Tesla, SpaceX and snippets from the movie “October Sky” which depicted passion for scientific exploration and innovation. A total of 171 students participated in the event.

Developing GUI using Python (TKinter) (02-08-2023)

Objectives: Enable the students to develop GUI using Python Tkinter. Benefits in terms of learning: At the end able to develop several partly-functional applications. Able develop layouts by using different geometry managers. Styling widgets by using styling options and configuring the root widget. Report: Topics discussed were the advantages and applications of the Python Programming Language, the creation of buttons, frames, and canvas, developing calculator applications, and developing an image viewer. Python Bootcamp (31-12-2022)

A Python Bootcamp work shop was conducted for the Second year Computer Science and Business System Branch on December 31, 2022. Over 60 students participated in the event and got an overview of the Python Programming language and learnt the basics of the language. They solved a few python programming problems and also solved a leet code problem. The students were enthusiastic and cheerful and very responsive.

The Department of Central Library and Information Center conducted “Optimal usage of VTU E-Learning Resources” on 02/12/2022 for second year students of Computer Science and Business System. Mrs. Supriya A V, Assistant Professor, Department of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, spoke about the facilities available at the college central library, benefits of VTU e-resource usage during research, paper publication and project report preparation. The students were shown a demonstration of a remote access solution that is specifically designed for effective access of digital content subscribed by VTU Consortium such as e- journals, e-books, articles from various publishers Springer Nature , Taylor and Francis, Elsevier /Science Direct, IEEE POP, Emerald, McGraw Hill and Turnitin Online Plagiarism Check Tool, Lanquill(Sententia) Netanalytiks Grammar Tool.

CSBS Branch Entry 2022-23 (24-11-2022)

Computer Science and Business System branch entry program was conducted by department cultural committee on 24th November 2022. Mrs. Pooja Kini, faculty at department of Computer Science and Business System welcomed the second year students. Invocation was done by Ms.Varsha from second year. Mr. Vinay P, Head of the department of Computer Science and Business System addressed the second year students and spoke about the uniqueness and advantages of Computer Science and Business System specialization in current IT industry. Mr. Himanshu and Ms. Priyanka Bharadwaj from second year expressed their aspirations for the next three years in the department.
